Healthy fats may hep slowdown brain decline

Consuming a diet that is reach in omega-3 like those found in oily fish like salmon may help protect you from memory problems and premature aging. This was according to a study recently published in Neurology, a journal of medicine.

Fish has been known to be a good brain food but the new study is the first research to link levels of omega-3 in the blood with the shrinkage of the brain, decline in brain function, and memory loss which sums up to a higher risk in acquiring Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The study involved 1,575 individuals who underwent several brain function tests, brain scans, and blood workup. Other factors were taken into consideration like age, education, gender, smoking, among others.

The human brain naturally declines in size and function with age but participants of the study who had lower levels of omega-3 had a brain volume which is similar to people who are two years older than them. The cognitive tests done with this group also resulted to scores showing that their brain function is similar to people who are three years older.

People with lower levels of omega-3 also showed higher amounts of white matter in their brains. The increased volume of white matter predisposes one to stroke and dementia.

The study though does not mean that we have to gobble up on fish and supplements with fish oil. The research was not designed to make clinical recommendations.

Government guidelines suggest around 8 ounces of seafood every week to help prevent heart problems. Walnuts and flax seeds are also great sources of omega-3.

Experts also want to point out that a good heart means a good brain.

Should You take Anti-Cholesterol Drugs as a Preventive Medicine?

There’s no question on how cholesterol-lowering medication has helped prevent strokes and heart failures on people with high cholesterol level. However, the recent pills cholesterolFDA approval for drugs like AstraZeneca to be marketed over-the-counter as a preventive medicine worries a lot of medical practitioners.

Unknown to most people, the JUPITER study which backs up FDA’s claim that these drugs are pretty harmless even to healthy subjects was only conducted on men over 50 and women over 60 years of age. If you’re around 24 to 35 and if you have a healthy cholesterol count of 35 or 45, you may actually experience side effects from taking this drug.

Medical practitioners like Dr. Mark Hlatsky of Stanford mention the risk of contracting Type 2 Diabetes. While no sound research can back up this claim yet, doctors say it’s good to be a bit skeptical. Despite FDA’s approval, anti-cholesterol medication should only be induced if you’re actually prone to heart failures and strokes. Ideally, you should only take them if you’re around 50 to 60 years old.

Dreamless Naps Won’t Improve Memory

Sleep has proven, time and again, to improve the results of participants on memory tests. Now, another test suggests that even an afternoon nap can improve your brain functions—but only if your dream.

sleepy feetAccording to Robert Stickgold, the director of Center for Sleep and Cognition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the brain is able to process certain details we’ve missed out in our consciousness while we’re dreaming. While the brain is dreaming, it processes which information to keep and which ones it can dump.

This way, when we take afternoon naps and we dream, we eventually improve the brain’s ability to store and process information. In the study, Stickgold had 99 participants memorize a complicated maze from a computer. Then, he asked them to navigate to a certain spot within the maze. After doing this task a number of times, half of the participants were then asked to take a 90-minute nap. The other half stayed awake.

Is Breast Cancer an Occupational Hazard?

The most commonly occurring cancer for women today is breast cancer. There have been studies which suggest that breast cancer in women is caused by abnormal sleep hours. This puts women who work at night at a higher risk of getting the disease. To date, though, Denmark is the only country which has awarded compensation for night shift women workers who have acquired the disease.

cancer ribbonIf other countries were to follow this trend, it can spell a sweeping economic difference all over the world. The latest study in China, however, didn’t reveal and direct connection between working at night and breast cancer.

Wong Ho-Chow who researches for the National Cancer Institute of Bethesda, Maryland, worked on this non-Western study. Chow confirmed that there was no association found even in women who worked at night for 25 years. The study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

This study followed 70,000 working women in Shanghai and focused on their work shifts and cancer status. After ten years, 1% of these women developed breast cancer, but the women who worked at night didn’t reveal a heightened risk for the cancer compared to women who worked during the daytime.

Suppressed Anger Can Actually Promote Cardiac Arrests

According to a study done in New York recently, patients with heart problems should be careful about how they handle their anger. Apparently, patients with a lot of suppressed anger experience thrice the risk of dying from a heart attack in the next five to ten years. However, Dr. Johann Denollet of Tilburg University also stressed that sudden outbursts of anger aren’t the best way to handle them, either.

angerDenollet said that patients should find a way to resolve their anger issues by taking the middle road. In other words, they shouldn’t trying to bottle it up, but they should try to confront this anger in a constructive, adaptive manner. The study also pointed out that anger can actually strangle the blood vessels, leading to abnormalities in the heart rhythms.

It was found out that people with Type D personalities are more prone to negative emotions like anger. This personality type is the perfect breeding grounds for stress and tension. About a third of people who suffer from heart diseases are actually Type D patients.

Despite the figures, though, Denollet said that people with suppressed anger and Type D personalities are bound to be unhealthy. Anger is actually a natural emotion, and it helps us know that there’s something happening which we don’t like.

Five Minutes Outdoors Can Make You Mentally Healthier

Long hours in front of the computer or cooper up indoors trying to study can definitely leave you feeling down. Some people think that physical exercises are overrated and there’s a greater need to boost the brain than the brawn, but the two might not have to be treated separately anymore. According to studies, just five minutes of physical outdoor exercises can actually make you mentally healthier. A lot of greens produce optimum results.

Gardening, farming and cycling were also among the recommended outdoor activities. According to Jo Barton and Jules Pretty of the University of Essex, society would benefit a lot if only people can “self medicate” with these “green exercises”.

This study was published in a journal called the Environmental Science and Technology. Barton and Pretty worked on a data collected from 1,252 people. The participants belonged to different age groups, genders, and mental health statuses. The data was actually taken from 10 studies which already existed in Britain.
